Information

HMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin) is used in men to treat hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, a condition where the body doesn’t produce enough hormones to stimulate sperm production.

How It Works:

  • HMG contains FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone).
  • FSH promotes sperm production (spermatogenesis).
  • LH stimulates testosterone production in the testes.

Uses in Men:

  • Infertility: Helps men with low sperm count or non-obstructive azoospermia (absence of sperm).
  • Often combined with hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) to "prime" the testes before introducing HMG.

Administration:

  • Injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly, usually several times per week.
  • Treatment can last for months, as sperm production takes about 70-90 days.

Side Effects:

  • Swelling or pain at the injection site.
  • Hormonal effects: mood changes, acne, or breast tenderness (rare).
  • Possible risk of testicular enlargement or increased estrogen levels.
