Information
HMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin) is used in men to treat hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, a condition where the body doesn’t produce enough hormones to stimulate sperm production.
How It Works:
- HMG contains FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone).
- FSH promotes sperm production (spermatogenesis).
- LH stimulates testosterone production in the testes.
Uses in Men:
- Infertility: Helps men with low sperm count or non-obstructive azoospermia (absence of sperm).
- Often combined with hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) to "prime" the testes before introducing HMG.
Administration:
- Injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly, usually several times per week.
- Treatment can last for months, as sperm production takes about 70-90 days.
Side Effects:
- Swelling or pain at the injection site.
- Hormonal effects: mood changes, acne, or breast tenderness (rare).
- Possible risk of testicular enlargement or increased estrogen levels.
